138 years is not a slogan, it’s proof of a mission that keeps showing up. From Savannah Grove Baptist Church, we talk with Mrs. Mary Alice Graham, president of the Women’s Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, and Dr. Sarah Simmons, second vice president, about how this statewide women’s ministry keeps Christian education and missionary work alive across generations.

We get into the real mechanics of the convention: the history of leadership, what it takes to host thousands of women, and how the three departments create a pipeline from youth (up to 17), to Young Women’s Auxiliary (18 to 45), to senior women (45 and up). You’ll hear stories that feel joyful and practical, from youth-led worship and performances to traditions like corsages, district colors, and the energy that comes when the room is full.

We also dig into impact you can measure. The convention supports HBCUs in South Carolina, including Morris College and Benedict College, with scholarship opportunities and major contributions. Then we shift to a powerful community health focus: mental health training through Hold Out the Lifeline, including a free class that can certify participants for three years and equip churches to recognize needs and respond with care. Add in women in ministry, scholarship fundraising like the Rainbow Tea, and a canned-goods service project that leaves help behind in every host community, and you’ve got a blueprint for faith in action.

If you care about church leadership, women’s ministry, youth development, HBCU scholarships, and mental health resources for congregations, press play. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more listeners can find Native Drums.

Welcome And Why We Gather

SPEAKER_02

Hello everyone. Welcome to Native Drums. I'm Jocelia Williams, your hostess for today. And um on this day I have with me, well, let me say this the 138th annual session of the Women's Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina is has convened here at the Savannah Grove Baptist Church. And I have with me today Mrs. Mary Alice Graham, who is the president and a dear friend. For a long time, friend, um uh president of the convention, as well as Dr. Sarah Simmons, who is my Sarah. Yes. And the second vice president. And she's the second vice president of this wonderful convention. Uh welcome, ladies, to Native Drums. Thank you. It's good to be here. Oh yes, yes. And we're we're just so excited that um Savannah Grove is the place where you're convening for this 2026 uh session, this 138th session. I mean, that's that's a lot of ministry. Yes, yes, it is, yes, it is. So

Purpose And Missionary Focus

SPEAKER_02

let's um talk about uh the purpose, the purpose and the history of this convention. Um, ladies, so I'm just gonna turn you loose on that and uh let you go, President Graham, and talk about that.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, the purpose of this convention is to promote the cause of Christ in South Carolina through Christian education and missionary work. We evangelize our communities and support education through Mars College and Benedict College, enriching lives through education.

SPEAKER_02

Amen, amen. Beautiful, beautiful. Now, there's a lot of history that comes with 138 years. So, between the two of you, can you just give us a little bit of that history that is to go? Sure.

SPEAKER_01

My church we're at.

SPEAKER_00

And this is our president is a member of that church, so that's why she is so excited and so happy. And um, our first president was Miss Fanny Davis. She was as late as the first president of the Woman's Baptist Education and Missionary Convention of South Carolina. Since um, Sister Davis, there have been today, this is our 17th president. So there were 16 others, so there's 17 presidents that have um had that position. And to each one of them have um contributed a great amount of growth. Right. Because each of them came in with their own what agenda and objectives for this Baptist convention and has been very successful.

SPEAKER_02

Right, right. So they they serve how many years? Five years? Five years. Five years is a tenure.

SPEAKER_01

And we still have three uh presidents living. Uh Dr. Hilda Gatson from uh Charleston, right? Uh Dr. Archer Neal from Columbia, and Dr. Jack Will and Kanti from right here from Savannah Grove Baptist Church. Uh-huh. That's right.

SPEAKER_02

Awesome, wonderful. So

138-Year History And Leadership

SPEAKER_02

now the convention um is made up of three departments, correct? Uh okay, we have a youth department, YWA, and the senior department, senior women. So let's talk about the youth, the youth department, because there's some historical um situations that come with that. 92 years of working with youth.

SPEAKER_01

We had the youth uh were in charge Monday night and on Tuesday. And uh um we had a very, very good time. The youth uh his age is up to 17, and uh when they go up to 18, they can be a YWA. YWA is from 18 to 45, and uh senior women is from 45 on up.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. And one of the amazing things about that is that um the youth perform. On the first day, um, they had what you might, it was it was awesome to see they had a fashion show and they crowned the pageant? They had a pageant and they crowned um in different ages, they were crowned. And then on that next day, they performed. The own speaker was probably he was a former youth that was a part of this convention. Still looks like a youth. And I thought he was a youth. Yes. And they had a big choir of young people, ages they were from six on up, and about 35 musicians. You would have thought that was the Miss South Carolina Passion that they had.

SPEAKER_01

And it was beautiful. We even had a we missed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yes.

SPEAKER_01

Our only one, but she was so precious. And then uh, I mean, we had six, six. You had six six participants. Okay, along with escorts.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yes. Yes, and they did the little etiquette skills. Um, they made the little curses, bows, when the judges, we had judges. Okay. And so the judges were able to determine um going through their little ethics and wonderful, it was it was lovely. That's great, a wonderful experience. Every children received a trophy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, more than one.

SPEAKER_00

More than one. Two or three categories.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

I thought I was back in um my childhood. I I wanted to participate when they had the gowns on.

SPEAKER_01

When you saw the little children,

Youth Department And Age Groups

SPEAKER_01

church wear. Church wear. I mean, they were not there.

SPEAKER_00

Two um two categories was your church and the dress.

SPEAKER_03

Oh.

SPEAKER_01

It was it was very beautiful. Oh, that's wonderful.

SPEAKER_02

That's wonderful. It's great to know that children are able to experience that. Absolutely. Have that experience. Absolutely. Now, another thing when it comes to the youth in the 92 years, let's talk about the camp that uh was developed back in the day for young people that took place.

SPEAKER_01

The Gandhi Dunbar. It's Dunbar Gander Retreat. At Mars College.

SPEAKER_00

And I was like, that Dunbar Gander Retreat. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

How old were you when you began?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I can tell you, I know one thing. I was 12 years old when I came and they brought me here to Mars College. And I'm like, oh, I don't want to stay, I want to go out with my mother, but let me share something with you. Because I came to Dunbar Gandhi Retreat, that I came again to Morris College for little summer activities they had. And then from there, I went to the Young People's Christian Assembly at Benedict College. So when I grew this, I kept going to Benedict College. My mother and father sent me there. And so it's great because when we talk about our schools, Morris and Benedict, we, as my president had just said that Morris College is ours, but we support both. And it is a it is so outstanding when you see what the women give to Morris and what the YWAs give, the young women. Right, right. We give major contributions.

SPEAKER_02

Great, great. That's wonderful. That's awesome that you as women are supporting our HBC. Yes, of course. And like you said, Mars College does belong to the Baptist Education Order.

SPEAKER_01

And we even have scholarships for uh students who attend Benedict and Mars.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, wonderful, wonderful.

SPEAKER_01

They have to apply for it, and and uh you each one, Mars and Benedict, can get one each year.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, great, great. Now you have a seat on the board at Mars College, is that the case?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, because of my position with the Woman's Baptist EM convention, I I have a seat on each board, Benedict and Benedict and Mars. In fact, Benedict's retreat board meeting retreat begins on Sunday.

SPEAKER_03

Oh Sunday through Wednesday. Yes, go next.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, well, wonderful. That's awesome. Thank you for your service, Madam President. You're welcome. Thank you so much. Now let's talk about the YWA. They they've um their duration is 73 years. Right.

SPEAKER_01

And the age for the YWA is supposed to be from 18 to 45. After 45, they're supposed to move up to the senior women.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

And uh we have a little trouble with that, but some some of the some of the YWAs say they're gonna be YWAs all their lives. Oh my goodness. And that today was their day, the YWA day. Uh, of course, I want to tell about that. Okay, because she is the advisor of the YWA.

SPEAKER_00

And today was our day. Okay. And it was awesome. It was awesome. Um, we had the opportunity to um on our day, our president, who is um Katrina Harrison, she spoke, she speaks, as well as on our missionary day, which would be Thursday, that Sister Graham speaks that day. And so it's just awesome that we had such good the choirs and the participation. It was great to see in the audience all these women with purple cassages like I just took off the purple cassage. That's their colors. That's our colors.

SPEAKER_01

White and lavender.

SPEAKER_00

And then on Tuesday, we would come and fellowship with her, almost seven or eight hundred women, and we will wear our white suits with red. Okay on Thursday. On Thursday. On Thursday. I keep saying Wednesday. On Thursday.

SPEAKER_01

So tomorrow is the senior women's day.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And I get excited because I get to hear her speak. I know she's gonna do her thing. To complete the evening, uh, we have a banquet in her honor. I get to be chairperson of that. I love it too. I get so excited.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, you are chairperson of that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and so we are preparing now um um for to be at the Civic Center on Thursday evening at 7 o'clock.

SPEAKER_01

Right, and our speaker will be Reverend

Youth Programs And Retreat Memories

SPEAKER_01

Danielle Brown from New Jersey. Okay. And AKA.

SPEAKER_00

I I know you want to hear that, but I wanted her to say that. And AKA.

SPEAKER_02

Uh so it's a soul, it's a sold-out um bankrupt, I'm sure. Yes, it is. Yes, it is. It is, yes. Yes, yes. Well, that is wonderful. We're looking forward to that. And then um the initiatives. There are, you do have initiatives within the convention that you support uh when it comes to the community. So let's talk about the health initiative. I know there is a mental health piece that you want to share with us on that.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, uh uh Delores Scott uh over Hole Out July Lifeline on Thursday during President's Hour, just before President's Hour, uh, they would do a um on mental health. They would uh, you know, mental health is real. Yes, it is. And so we use that that for five years, we're gonna have something about mental health to help people recognize what's going on with people instead of hurting the people. So so that's big. And also you can take classes, they they go to churches and you can take classes and you can be certified uh in a mental health uh class. You could for for three years. Yes, and and uh that all that comes through whole out the lifeline. But Thursday we will have uh two speakers uh who will speak to us about mental health, giving us information on how to recognize what's going on with a person so we can help. Yes, help the person, yes.

SPEAKER_00

And then, you know, I I like it because she's telling, she's telling them I like to say, because I'm a mental health consultant.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And so I was able when I came um to the convention, and this is one of the initiatives that we had the mental health. And um and I I could not believe that there was a course that you could have for three years and you could be certified, and you can go out and teach somebody else, but you must have that full day and so many hours in that course. And so what we have done in our area in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Spartanburg, South Carolina, she came in our area to one church. This one church told the next church about the mental health. Then all the mental health persons in Spartanburg, they they became certified. And um, you would think, well, was it in person? And I tell you, during the time COVID, she did a Zoom. Okay. I went through it that time. I went, I took the certification on that time, and I was able to administer to all the daycares. The daycares in Spartanburg, I became, after I took the certification, then I was their trainer. And it came from me participating at the Romans Baptist Education Convention here in the state of South Carolina.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And not only that, the presenters will go to your church.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Free.

SPEAKER_01

Free and free and set up a meeting uh useless on Saturday because it's an all-day thing. You have to stay there all day to get the hours. And uh uh after after that, you after the uh presentations, you get a test. You have to take a test. And to pass the test, and then you are certified for three years. And it's really wonderful. I have gone through it three or four times, you know, as the three years, uh-huh. Uh it's a good thing to, you know, keep your certificate.

SPEAKER_00

And one great thing about that is that the certification, I'm so proud of my certificate. Um, because as a licensed mental health person, um, we do have to have our 45 hours per year. And so when I take that, that gives you a gives my hours and a certificate that I can send to the state

Supporting Morris And Benedict Colleges

SPEAKER_00

that I do qualify for. Wonderful.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that that's great for our viewers to know that um there is a class that they can take through the through the women's convention um that will certify them uh as a mental health.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And you just have to uh you all you have to do is call Dolores Scott, and the name of her business is Hold Out the Lifeline in Columbia, South Carolina.

SPEAKER_02

Whole out the lifeline.

SPEAKER_01

Whole out the lifeline, and they will come to you. And she also has um classes in in uh the hospitals. Uh so uh all you have to do is look on the website and keep up with it, and they teach classes all year round.

SPEAKER_00

Wonderful. And what so many people don't understand, this is a complimentary class. There's not a fee. And when I heard it was on the fee, I really passed it on to every church. And she was coming to Spartanburg, going to every church. Right. And then if she could not come, she had some answer come and administer the information.

SPEAKER_02

This is amazing. This is amazing. Um, that's great information, great information. So now we talked about the scholarships that you uh give at Morris College, and now the spiritual life, that's uh that takes place on tonight. Tonight.

SPEAKER_01

Tonight is spiritual life night. And uh spiritual life is a group of women ministers, uh, and and uh we want them to use their voices as well. And it's on Wednesday night where we have six districts, and the districts cover different parts of South Carolina. District one, we we even have our different colors. District one is red, uh, district two is orange, district three is yellow, district four is green, district five is blue, and district six, we we're in district six, I'm in district six, which is purple. And so if you come tonight, you will see all those six colors, and and it is absolutely beautiful. It is absolutely and one of the uh members of the um women ministry will preach tonight. They have uh uh a member one year, and the next year they invite a guest

YWA Day And Banquet Plans

SPEAKER_01

woman minister uh from uh in South Carolina or anywhere. Okay and and it is a what it's a it's a wonderful program and uh gives the gives the um the the women a chance to preach and minister and teach uh on Wednesday night.

SPEAKER_00

And guess what else happens with that? What's that? Um out of the groups, I guess I work with her on all the groups, we will, out of the groups, the colors, we have a scholarship luncheon. And so when we have our scholarship luncheon, those same women get the opportunity to wear their colors.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

At the scholarship luncheon. We just had it in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And during that time, in order to grow our scholarship funds, um, we're gonna crown one out of those four, out of six, out of the six, one would be our queen. Oh, yeah. And she would be crowned. So we will crown, we will crown her. All this and all the funds go straight to what? Scholarship. Scholarship. And we did real well in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Yes, yeah. And see, after they found out that um what we did in in Rock Hill, see, before we had judges that would judge all six other tables. This time we say, we're not gonna do that. We want to make sure that we get more funds for our scholarship. So, whatever table you like the best, you go put your money at that table. And so that's how the tables were selected. And I know that we got over two, three, it was great money.

SPEAKER_01

And the name of that is uh Rainbow, it's a rainbow tea. Okay. And it was to capacity this year, and it's held every year in April, the second Saturday in April, and it was absolutely wonderful.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's awesome. That's awesome. Oh, but you both have a lot going on, and it's a blessing. It's a blessing that you do. Oh, yes, I love you, dude. And I know that you all have been working for, you know, a lifetime, really. Yes, yes. Really? Because like you said, you said 12 years old, you were at the camp.

SPEAKER_00

I was going, I was going there, and I'm like, well, I do I have to go again this year. I actually graduated from the um I graduated from Benedict. Yeah, Young People's Christian Steman. And guess where I attended college? Where? I graduated from Donald City. Benedict. And that was because of the and the same teachers that we had there, I came right back into the convention. My mother brought me to the convention. You know how you've been in the convention a long time. And my mother would bring me to the convention, and here I am sitting in this convention and say, I know them, I know her, I know this person because, just because we attended these activities, you know, the Baptist Convention. And that's awesome.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, except for the biggest. And you have a lot of people to go there.

SPEAKER_00

So that's why I went to Benedict, because I had already, um, during the summers, that's the only place I could go was to Morris College and Benedict. Right, right, right. So I love it. And I was I was a little Miss Mars College. I was a little Miss Benedict. So you

Mental Health Training For Churches

SPEAKER_00

see, I and you see where we support now why I love this organization so well. It's a lifetime experience. Yes, it is.

SPEAKER_02

I was just talking with someone earlier and today and as well as um yesterday about children, especially from one to five years old when the mole is still on, and what has recorded and experiences that they've heard today and you were, and that's their life. Yes, you know, absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

And so um we have a history of friendship though. I'm glad you said that. I want to tell you something. And I always love to say this do you know we were actually classmates? We graduated from the same high school and we went out different ways and came right back together.

SPEAKER_01

She was even in my wedding.

SPEAKER_00

That was in my wedding. And she disappeared from me. We came back to the convention. We came back to the convention.

SPEAKER_02

The convention is working together. Wonderful. Wonderful, wonderful. Well, look, we've got the one day session coming up for 2026, and then you have already decided where the 2027 convention will take place. So the one day session is held every November.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. We have the senior women are in charge one year, the next year, the YWAs. And and we rotate like that. So that's the way we we have it.

SPEAKER_00

And we we did it um last year. Um the YWA. So this year the honor is bestowed upon the senior women. And you would not think that it's not attended. It is really, we had a large um number that attended in um Charleston.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_00

I think it was at um that one day session was Jones Jones Island.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And that was at um Charlie Murray's church, the first Baptist church in Jones Island. And it was a beautiful area. Yes, it was. And a minister that spoke used to come from that particular area. Okay. So if they are hosting in that area, then they are responsible for, you know, um securing um our speaker.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, all right. And so you mentioned John's Island. That sounds like that's where you're going for 2027.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, that's where the convention, the convention is scheduled to go to that same church in Johns Island. And uh the one-day session this year, the one day session is always the second Saturday in November. Uh-huh. And we are we are scheduled to go to um Jerusalem Baptist Association in Georgetown. Okay. All right. Reverend Justin Gamble.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, all right. So you all are all over the state.

SPEAKER_01

Right, right. But we we we have a good time, and on Thursdays, we usually have about a thousand women in white. So when we select a church, it has to be big enough for that Thursday. We judge it by that Thursday. And uh so we um we we have a real good time. After uh John's Island, uh, you have you served five years, and if I'm still living, uh my last year will end up in Columbia at Brooklyn Baptist Church.

SPEAKER_02

Well, we um we pray um Psalm 91 over your life.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, thank you.

SPEAKER_02

Longevity. Thank you, longevity of life. Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

You should share with her, even though we um are here for this ministry, yes, but this this young lady gets the opportunity as a president to represent, you know, at various associations, right? National and everything. She travels. And then sometimes, can I share something with you? Sure. If she can't make it, she I'll go for you.

SPEAKER_02

I'll go for her. And you're the perfect representative for her. Perfect representative for her. I um, you know, we're really impromptu here, and I'm always messing with my cameraman cash. And so you all may have seen me uh directing over here. Uh huh. There's someone who keeps knocking at our door because we are in a different location on today, and um, they're knocking on the door trying to get in this location, but uh that's why I've been doing all of that. But um we always uh it's it's uh this is a part of the Savannah Grove Church and our church family they watch and other viewers as well, and we want to make sure that we gave uh the women, the uh women's baptism convention an opportunity to come on native drums because we're just so excited about you being here with us. Oh thank you. And it has you've been a blessing, the services have been powerful

Women In Ministry And Scholarships

SPEAKER_02

every night. Um, and so I'm looking forward to tonight. Uh it's women in ministry tonight. So I'm looking forward to that. And then on tomorrow uh for the the um health initiative and for president's hour. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Could you share Can we share with you that um we have a project? Oh really? We have a service project.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yes, please. Let's talk about it.

SPEAKER_00

So today, um many of our from it comes from all over the state of South Carolina. They bring um this time I saw her today, uh one lady, she tried to give me a bag of canned goods and a box, and I said, if you would just take it to the back and put it there, we will receive it tomorrow. So many would come tomorrow on buses because from Spartanburg, I have a bus. We have like a bus coming. Mm-hmm. They're gonna come and bring a bus, but they would have the canned goods on there. Um, the ladies that came in from Gaffney today, she was one of the ladies I saw earlier and asked me where she should put her canned goods. So we're excited about our project. And normally when we do that, we come into the area, we give it to some agency in this area.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, wonderful. And we do we do that everywhere we go. Everywhere we go. Every year we we that same project, we we leave food for our needies.

SPEAKER_00

We had soup kitchen last year. Okay, left it soup kitchen last year.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, well, I know, whatever. We have um agencies that would be ever so appreciative of what uh what you would be doing. Um, that's awesome. That's often awesome. Supporting the community wherever you go. Yes, leaving that trademark. Yes, absolutely. Well, again, it is so great to have you all here with us, and um we just look forward to what is to come in the rest of the session and um the blessings that you brought here to South to Florence, to the city of Florence, and the the PD really, because um with uh region six. Yes, region six going on. Uh yeah, so we're ever uh so grateful to you. And um we just uh you alright, Cash. They know I'm always Cass. Cass is our producer and and um camera operator, and so we're ever so grateful to him for all that he's done. I'll tell you, this could be he has really, really been working this week. Yes, he really has.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, he's all over the place here at Savannah Grove.

SPEAKER_00

And I really was wondering who was the gentleman when I came in on the

One-Day Sessions And Future Locations

SPEAKER_00

first of the weekend. He he was in the church, and someone on the other side, I saw him walking around the camera. I said, is he, you know, sometimes you want to ask, is he the TV man or is he the cameraman or who is that? Who is that gentleman? So now we know.

SPEAKER_02

Now you know Cash. Cash is our media director, and he um he does everything, he does a lot. He he does a lot. So we just thank God for him.

SPEAKER_01

It's good to have a good man around.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and committed. Yeah, yeah, well, that's committed.

SPEAKER_01

Well, again, thank you, ladies, ever so much. Oh, you're welcome for buying. Asking us to do this.

SPEAKER_00

And it's great to see you, my sisters.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. It was as as the young minister said yesterday, it was lit. It was lit.

SPEAKER_02

It was lit. Now, you know, um uh President Graham has spent time here at Savannah Grove Baptist Church for decades. I mean, I remember you were in the parsonage with uh with Dr. Candy.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

And uh you would pick her cookies. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, in fact, my my second child was almost born in their house. In the parsonage, yes, because

Community Food Project And Closing

SPEAKER_01

yeah, Lewis was almost born in their house. Yes, because that when school turned out, my doctor was here in Florence, so I came to Florence. Yeah, seriously. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you have a little history. Yes, yes, history.

SPEAKER_01

My husband and Dr. Cantee were very good friends. Yes, they were. Very good friends.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, they were, yeah. So it's always great to have you here with us.

SPEAKER_01

Well, thank you. Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

All right, everyone. Thank you ever so much for watching Native Drums, and we'll see you on next week.
